Club Statement on Westminster Pool

The Committee would like to update its members on the status of the Westminster Pool after the recent closure.

The club has been in close contact with the EA from Brampton regarding the low oxygen levels at the lake and as a consequence the club is continuing to keep the lake closed. This closure will stay in effect for at least the next two to three weeks under the advice of the EA.  The problem being the obvious low levels of oxygen and the loss of a number of fish due to this.

Steps have been put  in place over the last three weeks by committee members and Bailiffs to pump water  around the lake as advised by the EA, this in effect gets much needed oxygen into the lake , we have been  advised that putting peroxide in again would help as an instant aid,  but could then send the lake balance plummeting and could result in a complete fish kill.  Obviously the club follows their advice and will avoid this action hence the pumps being used.

Obviously these pumps cant be left un-maned because of the location and committee members have been manning them as much as possible. This action has undoubtedly helped the fish loss considerably but it is a short term solution.

The club are in contact with the town council and the EA  as to possible solutions.  We  know that the leaf debris going into the lake is the main problem, and options are being looked at. The fact that the water level is also so  low  is having an adverse effect on oxygen levels as is the weather,  despite the amount of rain we have had the ground water  table is still extremely low so we are governed by mother nature at present.

The club would like to reassure all of members that we don’t sit on our hands and that behind the scenes we are working tirelessly to  resolve the issues , so please be patient with us.

Please be aware that anyone found trying to fish the lake while this closure is in place WILL have their club card removed and membership terminated.

Also as a foot note we would like to offer a basic code of conduct that should be practised by all anglers on all waters, weather it be on our waters or else where , leaving your landing nets / keepnets/ carp sacks out in the daylight , preferably sunlight , to dry out,  as it  kills all forms possible  disease’s that could possibly be transferred from one  water to another,  so please try and make it standard practice.

Many Thanks from the committee.
